HBO’s Watchmen trailer reveals deadly terrorist cult the Seventh Cavalry in major departure from comics

HBO has dropped a new trailer for their Watchmen series and it gives us a closer look at terrorist group the Seventh Cavalry.

Based in an alternate version of 2019 without smartphones or the internet, it takes place over thirty years since the original, legendary graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

It’s set in a dark alternate universe

In typical Watchmen style, the plot involves a vast conspiracy centred around mentally unstable caped crusaders.

The villains are white supremacist terrorist group the Seventh Cavalry who wear Rorschach masks as tribute to the character murdered at the end of the graphic novel’s story.

A masked police detective called Angela Abar (played by Regina King) is hunting down the baddies.

But nothing is as simple as it seems, with one character saying: “There’s a vast and insidious conspiracy. If I told you about it, your head would explode.”

The trailer features Jeremy Irons as Watchmen’s antagonist Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias, as well as FBI agent Laurie Blake (formerly known as superhero Silk Spectre II, played by Jean Smart).

The show is a “remixed” version of the source material, according to showrunner Damon Lindelof.

In an Instagram post, the Lost writer explained: “Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along it did not erase what came before it. Creation. The Garden of Eden. Abraham and Isaac. The Flood. It all happened.

“And so it will be with Watchmen. The Comedian died. Dan and Laurie fell in love. Ozymandias saved the world and Dr Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica.”

Meanwhile, HBO said: “Set in an alternate universe where ‘superheroes’ are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground on its own.”

Watchmen is set to launch on Sky Atlantic in Autumn 2019.
